FAQs
Sales & Ordering
When does your dahlia tuber sale open?
Our tuber sale date and time will be announced each year on our homepage, Instagram, and via our mailing list. Sign up and follow along so you never miss it!
Why do items appear as "sold out"?
All varieties will appear as "sold out" until the official sale opens. Inventory will become available at the pre-announced time of our sale (in MST).
Why do items disappear before the sale?
Products may be temporarily removed 12-24 hours before the sale so inventory can be finalized and uploaded. They will reappear when the sale opens.
Can I combine multiple orders?
Currently, we are unable to combine separate orders. Please double-check your cart before checkout.
Can I cancel my order?
All sales are final once an order has been placed. Because tubers are sold in limited quantities and sales move quickly; cancellations are not available.
Do you ship outside of Canada?
No. Currently, we only ship within Canada.
Shipping
When will my order ship?
Dahlia tubers ship in mid-April through late May, weather permitting. You will receive tracking information once your order ships. For full details, please review our Shipping Policy.
Can you ship or release my order early?
We are unable to accommodate early shipping or early pickup requests. Orders are fulfilled within our scheduled spring timeline to ensure quality and
consistency.
Can you hold my order for a later ship date?
We are unable to hold orders beyond our scheduled shipping window. Tubers are shipped during our designated spring fulfillment period.
Do you offer heat packs?
We do not currently offer heat packs. Instead, we monitor spring weather closely and ship only when conditions are safe for transit. Dahlia tubers are sent while dormant and handle cool temperatures well. If a sudden cold snap is expected, we will delay shipping.
What happens if weather delays shipping?
We carefully monitor weather conditions. We reserve the right to delay shipment if temperatures in Calgary or along the delivery route are unsafe for transit. Orders will be dispatched when conditions are suitable to protect tuber quality.
Why is shipping a flat rate?
We offer a flat tracked shipping rate to keep checkout simple and transparent. Shipping costs include packaging materials and careful handling, so your tubers arrive safely.
I entered the wrong shipping address — what should I do?
Please contact us as soon as possible if you notice an error. Address changes cannot be made once an order has shipped.
Transit-related concerns are reviewed on a case-by-case basis in accordance with our Shipping Policy.
Local Pickup
Do you offer local pickup?
Yes. Free local pickup is available in Calgary, Alberta on designated mid-April dates. Pickup is by in-person handoff only.
When is pickup?
Designated pickup dates and time windows will be announced in advance on our website. After checkout, customers will receive an email to confirm their preferred pickup date and approximate arrival time. Orders must be collected during the confirmed pickup window.
If the listed pickup dates or times do not work for you, please select tracked shipping at checkout. Alternate pickup dates or times are not available.
Will I receive a notification when my order is ready?
Pickup dates and time windows are posted in advance. After purchase, customers will receive an email to confirm their pickup date and approximate arrival time.
A general reminder email will be sent prior to the pickup weekend; however, individual pickup reminders are not guaranteed. Customers are responsible for collecting their order during their confirmed pickup window and for texting their name and order number at least one hour prior to arrival.
What happens if I miss pickup?
Orders must be collected during the confirmed pickup window. We are unable to offer alternate pickup dates or times.
If you miss your confirmed pickup date, you must contact us within 48 hours to request shipping. Shipping must be paid via e-transfer before the order will be dispatched.
Orders converted from pickup to shipping due to missed pickup are shipped at the customer’s request and risk. Shipping-related concerns will not be eligible for review.
If no contact is received within 48 hours, the order will be considered unclaimed and is not eligible for refund.
Tuber Condition & Guarantees
What should I do if my tuber arrives damaged?
Please inspect your tuber(s) promptly upon receiving your order. If you have concerns, contact us within 48 hours of delivery or pickup with your concerns, order number, and clear photos of the tuber(s) in question. For shipped orders, photos of the original packaging and shipping label are also required.
Claims submitted after the 48-hour inspection window or without photo documentation cannot be reviewed. Full details are outlined in our Return & Refund Policy.
What does “eye guarantee” mean?
Each tuber is inspected prior to shipping to ensure it is firm, healthy, and has at least one confirmed eye at the time of packing.
Do you pre-sprout tubers before shipping?
Tubers are shipped while dormant and are not pre-sprouted prior to shipping, as dormant tubers handle transit more safely. Some tubers may naturally begin to pre-sprout before or shortly after arrival — this is normal and does not affect planting.
Do you guarantee blooms?
We guarantee that tubers are healthy and meet our quality standards at the time of shipment. However, we cannot guarantee growth, bloom performance, or overall plant success after tubers have shipped, as these depend on environmental conditions, storage, planting practices and care, beyond our control. Full details are outlined in our Return & Refund Policy.
What if I receive the wrong variety?
Every effort is made to ensure accurate labeling at all stages of dividing, storage, and shipping. Tubers are carefully labeled during the division process and handled with care throughout the season. However, as with all dahlia growers, labeling errors can occasionally occur.
Due to the nature of dahlia cultivation and the difficulty of verifying claims once plants are grown in individual gardens, Baby Bird Blooms does not guarantee variety accuracy and cannot offer refunds, replacements, or store credit for suspected mislabeled tubers.
Full details are outlined in our Return & Refund Policy.
What are Unverified Tubers, Mystery Tubers, and Mystery Packs?
Occasionally a dahlia tuber may not bloom in our garden before the first frost or may become separated from its original label during digging and division. Rather than discard healthy tubers, we offer them at a discounted price as Unverified Tubers, Mystery Tubers, or Mystery Packs.
All these tubers are grown in our garden and are individually inspected to ensure they are healthy and contain at least one viable eye before being sold.
Because the bloom has not been confirmed in our garden—or the original label has been lost—the exact variety or bloom characteristics may remain unknown until the plant flowers in your garden.
For full details, please review our Return & Refund Policy.
Growing & Care
I’m new to dahlias — where should I start?
We recommend reviewing our Dahlia Planting & Care Guide. It covers general planting depth, spacing, watering, and seasonal care tips to help you grow with confidence.
When should I plant my tubers?
Plant after your risk of frost has passed and soil temperatures have warmed (13–15°C or higher). In colder climates, this is typically late spring.
Can I pre-sprout my tubers?
Yes. Tubers can be started indoors in a warm, bright location for an earlier jump on the season. Keep the growing medium lightly moist but never saturated. General pre-sprouting instructions are included in our Dahlia Planting & Care Guide.
How should I store tubers if I can’t plant right away?
Store tubers in a cool, dry, frost-free location (ideally 4–10°C) until planting. Avoid excess moisture, which can lead to rot.
What if my tuber takes a while to sprout?
Dahlias can take up to 8 weeks to break dormancy, especially in cooler soil. As long as the tuber remains firm, patience is often the best approach.
Farm Practices
Are your tubers grown in Canada?
Yes. Tubers are grown in our front and back yard in Calgary, Alberta. Each variety is cultivated, divided, and stored with care before being offered for sale.
Do you sell imported tubers?
Imported stock is quarantined and grown separately before ever being considered for sale. Tubers are not offered for sale until they have grown successfully for a
minimum of one full growing season, been visually evaluated, and the variety confirmed.
Imported stock is only purchased directly from reputable Canadian dahlia farms and international dahlia growers or breeder.
How do you ensure tuber quality?
We monitor plant health throughout the growing season, sanitization between cuts, and practice careful hand-digging, division, and storage.
Each tuber is fully inspected during division in the fall and prior to shipment or pickup in the spring to ensure it meets our quality standards.
Are your tubers tested for virus?
Dahlias can carry asymptomatic viruses. While we monitor plant health and remove symptomatic plants, no growing environment can be guaranteed virus-free. By purchasing dahlia tubers, customers acknowledge that virus presence is an inherent risk of cultivation.
